Become a Mentor

Be the person who helps a young person see what is possible.

At Open Arms, mentorship is more than volunteering – it is a consistent relationship built around the individual young person. Our mentors provide encouragement, guidance, accountability, and exposure to new
possibilities while helping youth recognize their strengths, set meaningful goals, and prepare for adulthood.
We intentionally recruit qualified men and women from diverse professional and community backgrounds, including education, social services, healthcare, mental health, technology, engineering, finance, entrepreneurship, business, skilled trades, public service, law, and the creative industries. This allows us to thoughtfully connect young people with mentors whose experience and perspective align with their interests, goals, and aspirations.

What Mentors Help Build

Mentors may support young people with goal setting, academic encouragement, career and college exposure, life skills, decision-making, confidence, leadership, professional development, and access to new experiences and opportunities.

Our Mentors Standard

Every Open Arms mentor must:
1. Complete our screening process – application, interview, references, and required background/youth-safety checks.
2. Demonstrate consistency and reliability – be prepared to show up, follow through, and build trust over time.
3. Bring relevant experience – professional expertise, community leadership, or lived experience that can help a young person grow.
4. Complete mentor preparation – including Open Arms expectations, boundaries, youth safety, trauma-informed engagement, and culturally responsive practice.
5. Commit to the relationship – respect confidentiality and program policies, maintain appropriate boundaries, and participate consistently in the mentoring process.

How We Match

We build intentional connections. Mentor matches consider each young person’s goals, interests, personality, needs, and future aspirations alongside the mentor’s experience, strengths, and professional background.

The Commitment

Commit to consistent participation, reliable communication, appropriate boundaries, and building a trusted relationship with a young person over time.

The Impact

Help a young person build confidence, strengthen decision-making, explore education and career pathways, set meaningful goals, and expand what they believe is possible for their future.
